Those who need rental cars typically have to provide a card for payment. Doing so is necessary to secure a rental ahead of time or to pay at the point of sale when someone suddenly needs transportation, such as when their vehicle is in the shop.
Individuals arranging for a vehicle rental have the option of using either a debit card or a credit card for that transaction. Some people naturally prefer to use their debit cards so that they don’t defer payment on significant expenses. While that is a responsible approach to financial transactions overall, it may not be the best choice for someone renting a vehicle. There are a few compelling reasons to use a credit card rather than a debit card when making arrangements for rented transportation.
Credit cards often provide benefits
Many credit card providers, such as travel rewards cards, offer special cardholder benefits. Those benefits may include insurance coverage that protects rental vehicles. Such coverage can enhance any carryover coverage from someone’s personal liability car insurance policy. Additionally, some credit card providers have even negotiated discount arrangements with major car rental companies. People may qualify for slightly lower daily rental costs when using a credit card in some cases.
Credit cards provide a payment buffer
The other reason to use a credit card is that it protects someone from financially devastating charges. When things go wrong when someone is in a rental vehicle, the vehicle rental company might try to hold someone accountable for the cost of repairs or assess various other fees.
If a driver who rents a vehicle pays with a debit card, the company might pull capital directly out of their bank account. It could be relatively difficult to negotiate a return of those funds. On the other hand, it can be substantially easier to resolve disputes about fees with a credit card. Many credit card providers will reverse or put a hold on contested transactions, which isn’t a possibility after a completed debit card transfer.
While the chances of getting into a crash in a rental vehicle are low, the possibility still exists. Taking the right steps to protect oneself, such as paying with a credit card, can take some of the risk out of a vehicle rental in this regard.
